Need a way to think through overproduction. And artistic production. Need time to think, to write. I need a woods. I need Oppen's Mexican vacation. (Just kidding. Kind of.)

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Howard (the "grizzled prospector") explains that gold is valuable only because it takes so much labor time to get it out of the ground. CONGEALED.

thing is, you're doing the thinking through doing the work. the earliest reading groups were workers reading Das Kap at the plant, since it's not about getting away to get at it. remember, oppen didn't vacate, he exiled - and worked.
no way out but through...

But when was the last time you saw laborers reading Marx on their lunch break?

But a little bird suggested to me that the exile was funded? Which makes a difference in how I think about his "exile."

Not that Oppen's work isn't great.

Work.

aren't you a laborer reading on lunch break?
I like to get away from work in order to work too, just saying it's not the only way, nor necessarily the best way. the woods is also far from the social, and the social is what tests best.
re the opps:
"They were targets of the House Un-American Activities Committee during the McCarthy era, and ultimately fled to Mexico in 1950, where Oppen worked as a furniture maker."

Yep, I read on my lunch break. But while outside reading, I don't often see the construction workers reading. Or the men who wait for work on Cesar Chavez. Etc. You don't think it's true that Marx is found more often in the University than in the lunch pales of bricklayers?

Opps (whom I LOVE) "was taught carpentry by the family butler" (wikipedia)

I agree that the social tests best. Fully.

Thanks for your comments, Buuck.
